Fashion Friday – Fall Fabulous | San Jose Boudoir Photography

I love Fall! Starbucks and Peet’s tell me it’s already here with their sweet pumpkin treats, but the weather here in sunny Southern California proves otherwise. This is my fourth Fall in California and I wish I could say I miss East Coast Fall less and less, but the opposite is true. Of course, these feelings quickly fade when my old hometown is buried in snow and it’s below zero outside, but I do long for the beautiful foliage and crisp cool days.

This year I’m in luck because I’m heading to Connecticut to visit my folks next week. While it’s 88 degrees here, it’s about 68 degrees there, and I couldn’t be happier.

The irrational part of me wants to go shop for some new Fall clothes, but with a new home currently under construction, that’s probably not the best use of cash right now. Besides, my warm clothes have been hidden in the back of my closet for so long now that they’ll probably feel new anyway.

I will, however, be getting a nice Fall mani/pedi next week. I’m a little too excited about this, and already purchased my polish at Target a few days ago. (I like to use my own polish for mani/pedis before I travel so that I can easily fix any chips.) I decided to go with Essie’s Berry Naughty, which is a gorgeous deep berry, and thought it’d be fun to daydream about some new Fall duds to go with it. Here are some of my favorites:

Fabulous Fall
Even if I don’t need a whole lot of warm clothes here in California, I really love all of the rich and warm colors. What’s your favorite part of Fall fashion? Let us know in the comments:-)

Fashion Friday – On the Inside | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Friday already? My brain is still on Labor Day Weekend mode, but I guess I’m a little behind this week.

I’m still in a post-vacation fog after returning from my second trip to Las Vegas this summer, so I took to Etsy this week to dig up some fun fashion finds for you. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a big fan of Etsy and have a real appreciation for anything hand made.

Since just about anyone can open an Etsy shop, there’s often a lot of junk to weed through, but that’s kind of the fun part, and makes it even more rewarding when you find something good.

It didn’t take me long to find something good this time around, and that something good is a handmade lingerie shop called “On the Inside.” I was immediately drawn to this shop because of their tagline, “Comfortable Lingerie, Lovingly Made.” Sexy + comfortable is a winning combo in my book, and I think shop owner Elise Olson really hit the nail on the head with her company description.

“I love making women feel good, inside and out. I truly believe that if you are comfortable, you look and feel more sexy. This is what I strive to do with every piece of lingerie that I make for you.”

In addition to being incredibly cute, most of the lingerie can be ordered in a standard size OR custom made based on your own measurements at no extra charge, which really alleviates the risk of buying lingerie online.

And now for some of my favorites from the shop…

**Please note that these are not Boudoir Coterie images, they are directly from the Etsy shop**

I love everything about this set! I love the color, the fact that it’s made from soft bamboo jersey fabric, it’s sexy, and being modeled by a gorgeous woman with curves.

I’m a sucker for a pretty nightie that’s actually comfortable enough to sleep in, and this one looks like it fits the bill.

Here’s another great set. I love the how the black lace and bold colors make it perfect for a boudoir session, but it’s also practical enough for every day wear.

In addition to all the unique styles on the site, On the Inside also offers panty and lingerie set of the month clubs. How neat is that? It’s never too early to start holiday shopping!

Fashion Friday – Summer Sales | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyHappy Friday!

I don’t know how it happened, but Fall is already creeping up on us. As someone who hasn’t been a student for a long time, doesn’t have kids, and lives in the land of perpetual summer, I get pretty bummed when I start to see the telltale signs of Fall. I guess I should clarify and say the “commercial” signs of Fall, like the back-to-school displays that go up at the end of July, since there are actually zero signs of Fall here in Southern California.

I actually really miss Fall in good old New England where I grew up, but somehow this back-to-school display in July makes me a tiny bit sad. Thankfully, there’s an awesome silver lining (okay, I know it’s not THAT bad anyway) – summer sales!

Ahh yes. I love sales! Summer sales are even more awesome in Southern California because I can buy things on clearance that I can still wear in the coming months, but even if you live somewhere where that isn’t possible, there’s always lingerie! Colors and styles might vary a little by season, but lingerie is lingerie all year round.

I’ve been doing a ton of summer sale browsing online (who goes to the mall anymore?), so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite sales and finds.

One of my favorite stores to browse for sales is Anthropologie. I love their clothes, but most are ridiculously expensive, so I almost everything I own from there was a gift or purchased on sale. Their site also has really great user reviews, which I find super helpful. I have purchased a few nighties from there over the years and they are SO comfortable and cute. I love this body suit they have on sale now. It’s simple, sexy and fairly tame in the front, but is unexpectedly revealing from behind.

Next up is Journelle. I have to admit, I feature their lingerie on this blog a lot, but I’ve never actually purchased anything from them. What I love is that they have a HUGE selection, lots of fun styles, and a variety of price points (though they’re still kinda on the high-end). I might just have to finally splurge on something from their summer sale. Most of their sale items are bras and panties in every color you could imagine. Here’s one of my favorites.

Gap Body isn’t typically the first place I think of for lingerie, but I like how most of their pieces look cute and comfortable and are more reasonably priced. It’s definitely more every-day than special occasion stuff, but isn’t that what most of us wear most frequently anyway? Here’s a cute comfy nighty that totally fits the bill.

If you’re looking for something extra special, there’s always the La Perla outlet. Most prices are still pretty hefty, but definitely help make these gorgeous pieces just a little more attainable. Here’s one of their more “affordable” pieces, which is still totally gorgeous!

And finally, since Boudoir Coterie is a big fan of the Dita Von Teese line at Bloomingdales, I have to mention that a few of her pieces have made it to their sale section!

There are so many great summer sales, I could go on forever, but I won’t. Have you scored any awesome lingerie deals lately? Let us know in the comments…and perhaps think about a boudoir session to show off your new pieces.

Fashion Friday Vegas Style | San Jose Boudoir Photoraphy

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyAs some of you may know, I recently moved from Northern California to Southern California, and if this summer wasn’t busy enough already, I’m heading to Las Vegas next week for a girl’s trip.

While it might not exactly be the best timing, I’m super excited because I’ll be able to catch up with some of my Northern CA girlfriends, AND, believe it or not, it’s my first time in Vegas!

While I obviously cannot claim to be an expert on this one, I thought it’d be fun to share a few of the things I’m packing since Vegas seems like an awesome excuse to play dress up.

After professing my love for Rent the Runway a few months back I received a few gift cards, so this seemed like a perfect time to cash in on those. I’ll also be packing some of my new summer staples. Check it out!

vegas style

(Top-Bottom/Left-Right)

1. Slate & Willow Erica Dress, Rent the Runway – This dress is fairly simple, but I don’t own any red dresses, so that makes it special for me. I ordered it a few days early too so I can wear it for date night with my husband this weekend.

2. Badgely Mischka Fifth Ave. Showstopper Dress, Rent the Runway – It may be horribly cliche, but I just couldn’t go to Vegas for the first time without a sparkly dress. I really love the rose gold color of this one, which I think makes it a bit more unique and summery.

3. Nicole Miller Southern Plantation Earrings, Rent the Runway – Aside from the jewelry I wear every day, I haven’t unpacked a whole lot, which I decided was good excuse to rent a few pieces.

4. Factory Denim Roll Up Short, J.Crew Factory – The temperatures in Las Vegas are 100+ this time of year, so I’ll be slipping these on and heading to the pool.

5. Factory Bouquet Necklace, J.Crew Factory – I picked this up on sale while ordering a second pair of the Factory Denim Roll Up Shorts. See #3.

6. Jules Smith Viva Glam Necklace, Rent the Runway – See #3.

7. Vanessa Virginia Capuchina Dress, Anthropologie – This dress has become another summer staple for me since it’s super comfortable and can easily be dressed up or down.

8. Havianas Slim Legend – I’m not sure what party shoes I’ll be bringing yet, but you better believe I’ll be giving my feet a break at pool time (and every chance I get). I don’t have this exact pair of Havianas, but have similar ones I picked up at TJ Maxx a few summers ago. These are super cute and I love the bit of bling, but would definitely not pay $40 for rubber flip flops.

For the Vegas Veterans out there, what are your Vegas must-haves? Sunscreen and a bathing suit are also pretty high up on my list since I anticipate more time relaxing at the pool than hitting the casinos.

Fashion Friday Ohhh Lulu | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyHappy Friday! I hope everyone (who celebrates) had a fabulous 4th of July!

I was tempted to do a 4th of July post last week, but red, white and blue lingerie seemed lame. I Googled “fireworks” and “lingerie” together, but the only thing that came up was Katy Perry performing her song “Firework” at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Not exactly what I was going for. (Don’t ask what I thought I was going to find. I had no idea).

Anyway, I’ve been busy with moving for the last few weeks, and then once I got settled, I got sick. Needless to say, I needed a little help with inspiration for this week’s Fashion Friday, so I took to Pinterest for ideas and it did not disappoint. I was just a few scrolls in when I found a really neat handmade lingerie shop on Etsy called Ohhh Lulu.

I have to say, I’m really impressed by anything handmade. The best thing I know how to make is a good salad, so I have a lot of respect for people who make things that are good enough to sell and have people actually buy.

Besides lots of really cute lingerie, which I’ll get to shortly, there are a ton of neat things about Ohhh Lulu. The company started as a hobby for Sarah Elaine when she graduated from fashion school, and it’s since turned into a full time business. In addition to selling her cute lingerie items, she also sells a few sewing patterns in a separate Etsy shop – Ohhh Lulu Sews! Aside from her Etsy store, she has an awesome website and fun a blog where she shares stories about her life, inspiration, etc. What I also think makes Ohh Lulu neat is how she photographs her lingerie. I’ve seen some pretty nice lingerie photographed on creepy mannequins on Etsy, so I really appreciate Ohh Lulu’s unique approach.

Alright, now I’ll quit rambling and get to the fun stuff. It was hard to pick just a few pieces to feature from Ohhh Lulu, but here are a few of my favorites from her shop:

I told ya her stuff is cute! I now officially want all of it. I also really want to go on a picnic and eat cupcakes while wearing cute lingerie.

Anyway, I love the props Sarah uses in her photos and I think they lend themselves to awesome boudoir session inspiration too. I could totally see a boudoir session in that adorable strawberry bra and panty set with cupcake props (I think this could be interpreted in more way than one…). How yummy!

Does Ohhh Lulu’s lingerie leave you feeling inspired for a boudoir session? Give us a call or shoot us an email today!

Fashion Friday Summer Brights from Agent Provocateur | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography I’ve been meaning to feature Agent Provocateur for a while now, so I decided to do a little browsing over there today. I was totally planning to feature some classic pieces in black and other neutrals, but I was really struck by their bright summer collections!

While I usually prefer lingerie that’s a little more timeless and classic, I think it’s good to have a little more fun once in a while — and summer is a great time to do that.

There’s no denying it — Agent Provacateur is expensive, but they’re known for their unique and beautiful styles and are totally worth it if you’ve got the spare cash.

Also, while it’s totally not necessary to spend a lot of money on outfits for a boudoir photo shoot, if you want to spend a little more on some really special pieces, a boudoir photo shoot is the best time to do so.

If you think about it, you probably wear most special lingerie for a few minutes, and then it gets tucked away in a drawer and often forgotten. If you wear something for a boudoir session, you’ll have photos to cherish forever, whether you wear the item again or not.

Now it’s time for a few my favorites from Agent Provocateur’s summer collection.

I’m not sure I could pull off bright lime green with my pasty skin, but for those of you who can, how fun is the Brittnie collection?

Lime green definitely isn’t for everyone, but Agent Provocateur’s summer collection has a bunch of different brights, so there’s something for all skin tones. Check out this gorgeous grape number from the Janet line.

If you don’t want to commit to a fully bright ensemble, the Petunia collection is mostly black with a few bright details.

Last but not least, one of my favorite summer colors – turquoise! This color reminds me of blue skies and tropical beaches, and is flattering on so many skin tones. The beautiful Lavelle collection has some fun peek-a-boo details and bright pink accents.

Fashion Friday Summer Uniforms | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyI don’t know about you, but every summer I usually end up with one go-to dress that I wear over and over again, which I fondly refer to as my “summer uniform.” Since I’m getting ready for a big move this weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about my summer uniform the last few days and am so thankful I have a great one this year.

I’m moving a long-distance, so my stuff won’t be arriving for two to five business days until after I arrive, which means I’ve got to bring some clothes to tide me over. That’s all fine and dandy, except that I have a small car and two cats to transport along with other various items that can’t go with the movers. This means I have to pack extremely light (not a strong point for me) and think really strategically about what clothing items to bring. Thank goodness I’ve already got an awesome summer dress that I’ll be wearing a whole lot until the rest of my clothes arrive.

I’ve never really purchased a dress with the intention of it being my summer uniform, but I just realized that the one that fit the bill for me last summer, and one that’s quickly becoming this summer’s favorite, have a ton in common.

Here’s this summer’s favorite from Anthropologie:

This dress was a little on the pricy side for me, but I fell in love with the bright and fun pattern as soon as I saw it, so my husband (a very smart man) got it for me for my birthday. Needless to say it’s already earned it’s keep and I’m even strongly considering buying it in the other color it comes in too!

My favorite dress from last summer, which still on pretty heavy rotation in my wardrobe now too, is from J.Crew Factory. They no longer carry the exact dress, but this one is an extremely close match, with the only real difference being a slight variation in the pattern:50449_KE7098

I have to give a little disclosure on this dress, since it’s from J.Crew outlet, the one I have is sewn a tiny bit off. However, I can honestly say I didn’t notice it until halfway through last summer, and I received so many compliments on the dress I don’t think anyone could tell. It doesn’t stop me from loving the dress, but it can be a tiny bit annoying at times.

Anyway, since these two dresses have become serious wardrobe staples for me, I thought I’d share some of the qualities that make them so awesome. If you don’t already have a fabulous summer dress (or two, or three), try to find one with the following qualities. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

1. Versatility – Both of my dresses could be worn with flats or dressier wedges, making them appropriate for an array of events.

2. Comfort – These dresses both still feel great after a big meal. They can also both be worn with a conventional bra and have loops in the straps to keep bra straps in place.

3. Packability – These dresses are both made from a heavier cotton material, which may seem counter productive in summer months, but this keeps them from wrinkling when packed. Since they’re both tank-dresses, I don’t find the fabric to be too hot, and it doesn’t stick to you like some thinner materials would when you’re sweaty.

4. Fun Pattern – This isn’t as important as some of the other features, but I think I’d get bored wearing these dresses all the time if they were just solid colors. The only drawback here is that it’s more noticeable if you wear them often, but I like to believe that no one really pays that much attention. Also, I’m bad with accessories, so having a dress that’s interesting on it’s own is better for me and less to pack when I’m traveling.

5. Machine Washable – Washability is a big one for me, especially in the summer. Since I wear these dresses so frequently, it’s important to be able to wash them at home.

Do you have a “summer uniform?” If so, let us know in the comments! I’m always on the looking for more versatile dresses and outfits. You really can’t have enough of those in your closet.
