Boudoir Sessions

Simple & Beautiful | San Jose Bay Area Boudoir Photography

In recent months I have started to fall more in love with sheet shots. Sheet shots are a set of images that focus on a women’s beauty. No frills or fuss, just her, a bed and my lens. I have been thankful that more and more clients are braving these shots. There is just something so beautiful about a relaxed woman in bed. These shots are sexy and playful and remind me of a romantic weekend getaway where you can lounge in bed on a Sunday morning. Sans kids, deadlines, work or any other distractions. Aaaaahhh, what I would give for a weekend away… but I digress.

Here is a gorgeous set of the lovely Miss M. There were more, of course, but these 3 black and whites are my very favorite from her session.

Oh, and the other bonus for sheet sets… no need for expensive lingerie. 😉

Are you brave enough to rock a sheet set?

I’ve been a little MIA, and I apologize. It’s been a busy season with lots of gorgeous ladies in the studio, my amazing husband working his butt off to finish up the last of the studio remodel and then we had to throw in the family being sick. Blah! The good news is I am back on track and finally got to shoot my second gorgeous couple last weekend. I cannot wait to dig in and edit these bad boys(although you can see a few more peaks on our Facebook Fan Page). But first I need to finish up a few more client edits. Here’s a little peek at the hotness to come… and steamy HOT it is!

A Boudoir Story | san Jose bay Area Boudoir Photographer

I have mentioned before about clients having a story and how much I love to learn about each woman and the reasons behind her booking. There is always more than this just being a gift even if that is the main objective. In the boudoir community we(photographers) will sometimes hear the negative about what we do. How it’s referred to as… and I feel ridiculous even saying this but, porn. LOL! We hear opinions on how it degrades women or religious views stating how it is wrong and why. Fine, I say. Anyone can choose to believe what they want when they are only looking from the outside and have no first hand experience with it but I will loudly, and very proudly disagree. I know first hand the effects a boudoir shoot has on women. I know how hard it is to even take that first step to call or email. And then actually DO IT! I understand the insecurities about our bodies as we age and have children. I understand the loss of feeling young and sexy and I can totally relate to the over all thoughts of not feeling pretty enough in general. It’s a tough word that we live in. The constant judgments, physical scrutiny and the “ideals” that society puts on a woman. What I do is far from porn or degrading to women. It is an experience that’s empowering, enlightened and definitely, fun. It brings back confidence and sexiness and at times it even shows a woman a beauty that she never knew existed. Time after time after time I am told just how amazing each woman feels after spending just a short while in front of my lens. And for that I can say, believe all the negatives you want about Boudoir Photography, but I know the truth!

A few months back I received the sweetest inquiry from a very nervous girl. When I sat across from her for the first time I could see her excitement and anxiety all wrapped up in one. What was most humbling was her honesty and willingness to share her story with me. Here was this beautiful woman who, and I’ll be perfectly honest, most of us gals would look at and think, *Sigh* I wish… That old adage we learned in grade school, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” is so true on many levels. The truth was, this beautiful woman, wasn’t feeling what everyone else can see. This would be more than just a boudoir session for her. This was truly a step that took many months… really, years, to get to. She was ready to fight back and succeed at this “challenge”. Not just as an amazing thank you to her husband for all his support through her ups and downs but most of all a gift to herself that took all her courage and determination to do.

After such a long winded intro…haha, I feel very honored that she is willing to share more of her story and her experience at Boudoir Coterie with all of you. So without further adu, here is what Miss J had to say:

If anything were possible, what would you change about yourself physically? This is a question we’ve probably all been asked. I’d wager some popular answers are a smaller waist, bigger breasts, perfect abs or straighter teeth. Nowadays, nearly all of these “improvements” are attainable and fairly easily so if someone is motivated enough. Generally speaking, it seems most people opt not to pursue actual physical adjustments due to cost, pain or the inconvenience of upkeep. Also, many people likely can think of a part of themselves they’d change but aren’t consumed by it or bothered by it enough to take any drastic action. But what about people who are plagued constantly by a negative body image – so repulsed by even finite parts of themselves that they find it hard to function effectively, form meaningful relationships with others or even leave the house? These people do exist, their pain is devastating and their condition is real. It’s called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), and while it ranges in presentation and severity, it is undeniably a heavy burden for all those suffering from it and being little-well-known is difficult to treat. It mimics many symptoms of anorexia/bulemia and is categorized under the spectrum of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD).

Recently I was diagnosed with BDD, and while it wasn’t a huge shock, it was a tough pill to swallow. I always sensed something might be wrong, but it was easier to ignore that feeling. On the one hand, it felt like a great sigh of relief to put a name to my problem – to know I wasn’t alone and that maybe there was hope. On the other hand, I felt embarrassed, stupid, ugly, crazy and ashamed.

I can remember being as young as 6 years old and being hyper aware of what my belly looked like, always sucking it in and positioning my body in such a way to never look fat or pudgy. For the last 20 years I’ve spent countless hours a day checking my figure from all angles, leaving one mirror and being compelled to check the next one I passed even if it was just down the hall. I would literally measure my waist and weigh myself several times a day – agonizing over the number and basing my daily food allowence on the results. I would stare into the mirror so closely that I would feel bothered by the size of my pores, skin cells on even a basic microscopic scale and feel like my features and limbs were expanding before my eyes. I would get dressed then change countless times, generally into increasingly baggy/shapeless outfits – clothes I felt I could breathe in. I’d find it difficult to avoid staring at others, comparing myself to them – are they skinnier? They look so mature compared to me. They have a beautiful unblemished complexion. She has sex appeal and confidence. As I grew older, I found it painfully difficult to form relationships with people – especially guys – you can forget spontaneity or intimacy. I’d be extremely guarded in physical interactions, becoming increasingly distant and aloof. I would only hold myself in certain positions and was constanly flexing my muscles to always appear toned. My mind and body never truly relaxed. It was completely exhausting.

I kept telling myself that everyone felt the same way, that it was normal to hate yourself. When someone would ask me what I would change about myself physically I’d find myself starting from my foreheard and quickly becoming unable to stop until I was down to my toes. There was sincerely no part of myself that I found acceptable, I felt suffocated constantly by the sheer weight of myself both physically and mentally – it was crippling.

I still struggle with these intrusive thoughts, but thanks to my amazing husband, a great therapist and the strong support of family and friends, I am actively taking control over the problem. I now talk to someone regularly about my past and current struggles and am learning healthy ways to cope. I take Prozac, which at first felt so defeating but now I realize is worth it if it improves my quality of life. I am just now seeing what it is to feel so loved and to be able to wholly reciprocate that love. I finally let my husband put his arm around my waist and snuggle me at night. I am starting to see that we all have at least some sex appeal and am getting braver as far as embracing and exuding that. I find that part the most difficult – outwardly expressing a positive body image, because to be honest, I’m still faking it a lot of days.

There’s a woman to whom I owe tremendous gratitude and she is Danea Burleson. With my one year wedding anniversary fast approaching this summer, and after being in intense therapy since January, I decided my husband deserved a gift that would knock his socks off! He is always going out of his way to compliment me and make me feel gorgeous. He has been phenomenal over the years, patient with my insecurities and mood shifts, never giving up on me. He has always hated how I won’t let people take my picture – typically I’ll throw a fit when a camera comes out because it’s always only ever been painful to see the results. But I knew he of all people would appreciate a picture, so after a couple months, I worked up the nerve to contact Danea for a boudoir photography session – and it has been one of the best decisions ever.

This photo shoot was a testiment to my progress, the love I have for my husband and of course the fact that I have always enjoyed a challenge. The experience was like no other, and surprisuingly I wasn’t even particularly nervous. Danea was professional, friendly and sincere in her compliments. She made me feel comfortable immediately, like we were just 2 friends hanging out. When I saw the pictures, I remember feeling overwhelmed in a great way. I had never really seen myself in a way that didn’t disgust me – quite contrarily, I felt proud! Danea has helped show me that we are all beautiful in one sense or another, and she is gifted in her ability to showcase that beauty. Needless to say, my husband was elated with the gift, and after making some typical macho sexual remarks made sure to tell me how proud he was of me for doing something so far beyond my comfort zone.

Like I said, I still have plenty of down days, but they’re steadily improving. Admitting that I do have a real problem, seeking help and following through with treatment and partaking in this photo shoot have made worlds of difference in my life. My husband and I are closer than ever before in all possible ways. I feel like I am living for the first time instead of just existing – and let me say it feels wonderful to just breathe again.

Okay, so yeah, I totally teared up when she sent this to me.

I am so very happy for you Miss J and cannot thank you enough for letting me share your deepest thoughts with everyone. Such an amazing inspiration! So now…  now let’s show ’em just how gorgeous you are!

These next few shots I just love. The outfit was her idea and she rocked the sweet and sexy cowgirl look. Now normally I don’t show nudity on my site but this tushy shot was just too cute not to share.

Bang, bang!

Fifty Shades Of Grey Boudoir | San Jose Bay Area Boudoir Photography

Yes, I went there.

I have a confession, amongst all the hype, I haven’t, wait for it… even read the book. *Hangs head in shame* But here’s the thing… after this shoot I have to say, curiosity has gotten the best of me and I am breaking down and purchasing it for my Kindle. I am intrigued. Especially after the discussion came up in a forum of fellow boudoir photographers who described scenes that would be cool to try and replicate and that the few images I shared with them were too “clean”. LOL. So as you look through these images please remember that this was simply a Fifty Shades of Grey inspired shoot. Not meant to replicate, nothing too dark, nothing too racy because after all this is a public access site. 😉 I wanted the essence of 50 Shades, a hint if you will, of sexy meets a little naughty with lots left to the imagination. It’s was fun  to get to play and my Coterie Girl, Andrea. She was awesome, beautiful and willing. Yay!

This wasn’t just about a sexy book however, but also a shoot meant to experiment in the new San Jose Studio space(which is so close to being finished I can taste it). We shot at sunset and I had the opportunity to play with gorgeous sun flare through the windows and even my lights, which I am not a huge fan of using but I always enjoy experimenting and despite my hesitations I end up liking the results. Wow, run on sentence much? Hahaha. Alas I will always be a natural light lover at heart. This session was fun, sexy and playful and I am loving the results and maybe, just maybe, it will inspired some clients to test out their 50 Shades ideas at a session! *Wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Oh, oh, oh one last thing, many of these outfits are from Besos (black corset, bra & masks)and I am in LOVE with the ribbon bra and panties near the end. They are from a Colombian line called Ellipse( I’m so in love. ♥♥♥)and Gail is ordering these soon so head into Besos to get yours! – but save me this set, it’s on my Must Have list. 😉

There are so many images that I decided to do this gallery style, enjoy…

My apologies but this gallery has been removed… I will try to reshoot and provide even better images soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Are you ready to get your Fifty Shades of Grey on?

I have limited session spaces between now and Christmas and oh what a deliciously naughty little gift that would be for someone special. 😉

More Than A Pretty Picture : San Jose bay Area Boudoir Photography

I’m not sure if I’ve ever said this publicly… okay, yes I have, many a time and here it goes again…. I LOVE my job. There are so many reasons as to why, with a big part of it being the creativity. Not only do I get to guide my clients, I get to be artistic in how each girl is photographed. We work together with posing and expressions. Then I get to finish each image… more creativity. ♥ I rarely do very much to an image and try to stay as true to the woman and her natural beauty as possible. But the real reason I love this job, and as silly or cliche as this might sound, is my clients.

Every client is different from personality to ethnicity and body shape. Each woman has come to me with an openness and trust to help her look and feel her best. Strangely I never feel the pressure to do so, it just happens. I don’t doubt it will happen, it just does. Now granted when I have the amazing talent of Andrea or Melissa at my side doing hair and makeup, it’s one less thing for me to worry about. They do their magic. I do mine. But no session would be successful without the key player, the client. 🙂

Getting to know my clients can be key to successful sessions and another great “perk” of the job. Knowing what they want, how they want to look and the final images they would like to present is a fun calibration on everyone’s part and ultimately it always circles back to trust. In a recent session my client Miss J put her full trust in me. The results were magnificent. She quite literally bared it all. She told me her story, she opened up and put her trust in me and she embraced this opportunity to do something she wouldn’t normally do.

Behind every pretty picture I take, is a woman. A woman with a story. A woman  who wants nothing more than to feel beautiful in her own skin.

A Boudoir Coterie Session | San Jose Boudoir & Glamour Photography

Ever wonder what really goes down when you book a Boudoir Coterie photo session?

I thought I would give a run down on how a session with me(Danea) plays out- from start to finish. This will give everyone a great idea of what to expect and the experience I strive to give all my clients. I am not a “show up at this time, shoot and go home” photographer. I invest myself in each client just as each client is investing in this wonderful experience for themselves and significant other. So let’s get started…

First, you need to contact me.  Seems obvious right? But nerves can stop you from picking up the phone or clicking away on your keyboard. So take a deep breath, relax and go for it. Regardless of it being through email, contact form or phone call, I will respond as soon as possible to answer your questions. I prefer to schedule a complimentary in person consultation at the studio to go over my products and investment guide as it always poses more questions and it’s so much easier to sit down and go over everything than it is to go back and forth through email. Besides, it’s a great time for you to see the studio, meet me in person, enjoy a glass of wine and have fun. I recommend to all inquiries, to shop around and meet any potential photographers they are thinking about working with ESPECIALLY for boudoir. Not only do you need to be drawn to the photographers work and style but to their personality. If you don’t feel comfortable with him or her(or myself) then it will show in your images and you won’t have the amazing time you deserve. So yeah, as much as *I* want to be the one your hire and it’s not the norm for businesses to push you towards their competition, I encourage you to explore, it’s your investment and being informed and happy with your final decision is very important.

During your consult you will decide if you are ready to book and if so which package or session suits your needs, then we choose a date. Once you are all booked in we will go over a small questionnaire that will help me get to know you better and understand how to customize your shoot- don’t worry, it’s painless and dare I say… fun. 😉

Next we discuss wardrobe and if you would like to add a complimentary wardrobe consult. These can be at the studio, if you already have ideas of what you want to wear or at a local boutique where we’ll spend a few hours shopping for the perfect items! I recommend crashing your closet for all kinds of  “non lingerie” items that we can sex up a bit. Haha. During this wardrobe consult we will piece together your outfits for the day of your session.

As you can see, a  pretty scarf and panties can look amazing!

Sexy boudoir pictures San Jose Bay Area Photography

Once your wardobe is set and any shoot ideas are in place you are ready for your session. The day of your session you will arrive MU free with day old hair(unless you had a crazy previous day and it needs a good washing, hahaha) but a bit of product can be a good thing for holding a style. It’s also a great idea to arrive sans undergarments or at least wearing items that are not constricting, deep panty lines on your booty are not attractive. 😉

My makeup artist and I will go over our MU plan with you and this varies per client depending on skin tones and facial shape. What I ask the most is that you trust us, as we know what will look amazing for your features. Using my professional MU artist is mandatory and although you will have final say, I will not allow you to go over the makeup with your own when she is through. Wondering why I am being a hard ass on this? Well, simply put photography MU looks vary greatly from everyday MU and my artists know my style and what works best for me… here’s a great little link that explains it a bit better:  Boudoir Makeup Service- A Must!

While you’re being beautified I will be organzing your outfits so you are ready to go… and then, exhale, we begin. Don’t worry you’ll be just fine and after being pampered and maybe a glass of wine, you’ll be having a blast in no time! Sessions are fun and goofy and I assure you, your nerves will melt away within minutes.

After your session you will be walking on air and feeling like a million bucks… as I am told by my clients. 😉 Unfortunately for some of you this will also be the time you need to hide the evidence and wash that MU off, although I say to tell that man of yours that you had a makeover at Sephora and their eyes will instantly glaze over – they’re guys, they won’t care. LOL. Besides then you can rock it the rest of the night!

So now comes the REAL hard part… waiting while I edit. This can take up to two weeks, at which time we will schedule your reveal, admire how amazing you look and choose the images for your order. If you purchase an album, expect a few more days for me to design it and privately post your album for you approval. Albums can take 2-6 weeks from your approval and order date depending on which album you are ordering(different companies have different turn around times) and the time of year(fall is the busiest and labs are inundated with orders so please keep that in mind when booking a session with a “need by” date).

Once your complete order arrives I will contact you for one more meeting so you can finally have the goodies in hand! Please note that I deliver orders in full and do not break them up as items arrive back from the labs. However we can make special arrangements if we need to have something special and the album delivery will pass your “need by” date. But we will go over your needs and I will do my best to accommodate special requests.

Other things I would like you to know…

Yes, I can shoot on location, just ask for details.

No, I do not supplies lingerie, although I do keep a few basic items in the studio for use.

Yes, you can bring props for some fun shots! Even a bike can be sexy. 😉

Boudoir Coterie photography studio

Yes, get your nails done, keep them neutral and pretty and you can never go wrong with a French Manicure.

NO! DO NOT TAN! The camera picks up an orange tint on overly tanned and spray tanned skin. You may not see it with the naked eye but the camera certainly does and it’s a photoshop nightmare. So trust me, your skin will look beautiful and creamy as is!

I think that’s about it, however I do have more Q&A on my Q&A page.

I hope this helps ease the mind of some of you on the fence about booking and if nothing else, was a fun view into the Coterie experience!
