Fashion Friday Show-Stopping Shoes | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyFor last week’s Fashion Friday we talked about fabulous backsides. Today I wanted to feature another fun detail that’s often overlooked – shoes!

Shoes might not be the first thing to come to mind when you’re planning boudoir outfits, but they can really add another dimension to your photos.

Got a pair of killer heels that leave you with aching feet and blisters? Perfect! Since you’ll only be on your feet for a short amount of time, and you won’t have to walk 16 blocks, a boudoir session is the perfect time to wear those totally impractical stilettos you promised yourself you’d find a reason to wear one day. Even if you only wear the shoes once, you’ll have photos to cherish forever.

For my session I wore a pair of black five-inch heels that had been hiding in the back of my closet since the day I purchased them at TJMaxx (a great place to look for shoes if you need them). They turned out to be difficult to walk in and a bit too big, but my judgement was clouded by the $19.99 price tag. They might not be great for everyday, but they were perfect for my session.

Need inspiration? Here are a few of my favorites from around the web:

If you’re thinking about what shoes to wear for a boudoir session, it’s important to plan around the rest of your outfit. Do you want
your shoes to be the star of the show like these?

Chuckie Arlund Worshop | San Jose Bay Area Boudoir Photographer

It’s been over a year that I’ve been sitting on these images. Last March I was able to attend WPPI,  a large photographers convention in Las Vegas and attend a couple workshops. One small workshop on lighting was hosted by Chuckie Arlund. It was a group of 8 or so photographers in a small hotel room, one nervous but lovely model and the teaching about Radio Poppers and playing with lights. Each photographer had a few minutes to play with the poppers which was pretty cool. Here’s a behind the scene shot of Chuckie with the light meter, my friend and fellow Boudoir photographer Petra(holding the light), and the lovely Dana.

I couldn’t tell you which the following images were done with the radio poppers and which were natural light etc… it was too long ago, but there sure is a difference in the light and colors among these images. It was fun to get to play with these and I was pretty sure I was going to order them, but I didn’t get around to it after my trip and now I would need a refresher course to remember how to use them. Haha. Regardless I enjoyed the workshop and I couldn’t just let these lovely images sit in a folder. I may have only had a few moments with her but Dana did a wonderful job and I wanted to share the few images I took. Thanks again, Chuckie and Dana!

Fashion Friday Bridal Boudoir | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography

Happy Fashion Friday!

Bridal Boudoir is becoming more and more popular these days (if you don’t believe me – take a look at Pinterest!) and there are so many cute outfit options. If you’re planning a bridal boudoir session and need some inspiration, read on!

I had a boudoir photo session about a year ago as a gift for myself (okay, it was actually a gift for my husband-to-be, but if you’ve had a boudoir photo shoot you know what I’m talking about!). Bridal was one part of the session, but looking back I really put a lot more effort into my other two outfits. With all of the other wedding planning I had going on, when it came to the bridal part of my session, I just grabbed a cute white bra and panty set from Victoria’s Secret and called it a day. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a good bra and panty set, I was really just in a rush and had no idea how many other options there were.

If you’re in the midst of planning a wedding AND a bridal boudoir photo shoot, here are some fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Now that I’ve found all of these, I might just have to have an anniversary session one day. White isn’t really just for brides anyway. bridal boudoir

Clockwise:

When you’re planning for a bridal session, don’t forget about accessories. One of the easiest things to do is to wear your wedding accessories if you already have them. Might as well kill two birds with one stone. Flowers also make a great prop and they don’t have to be anything too fancy. I’m a big fan of a simple bouquet with just one type of flower like we have shown HERE in one of my past bridal posts. It’s a great way to add a pop of color without being a distraction. Or, if you happen to be splurging for a trial bouquet and time it right, you could always use that too.

Valentine’s Day 2014 | San Jose Bay Area Boudoir Photographer

It’s been three years since I launched Boudoir Coterie. Three years in our quaint yet awesome San Jose studio space. Three years of beautiful and sexy women who have braved stripping down and stepping in front of my camera.

Three fabulous years!

I hope you all have a beautiful and very sexy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Boudoir Coterie!

Fitness Fabulous | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography I’ve never been much of a New Year’s resolution person, but I do usually try to re-focus my energy towards healthier habits during this time of year. Most of this involves getting back on track with things that went out the window during the holidays (they started in July, right?). This year is especially challenging since I got married in April. I was eating really well and working out a ton up until the wedding, and I bet you can guess what happened next…

Anyway, no matter what your health and fitness goals are, if any, I find nothing makes a workout better than a cute outfit. I know this may sound incredibly shallow, but personally I think that whatever it takes to motivate yourself, so be it. For me that happens to be clothes, but I have a sneaking suspicion I’m not the only one.

Since it’s mid-January, which is right around the time the excitement of a new routine starts to wear thin, I thought I’d do a fun roundup of some fun workout clothes that might just add a bit more inspiration.

Fitness Fabulous

1. I love the idea of this longer racerback tank from Athleta. I don’t know about you, but no matter what I do my shirts are always riding up when I’m working out. This would be perfect for yoga, especially if you want a little extra coverage, and would be great for other activities too.

2. I’m a sucker for a cute bag, and I love the colors and detailing on this one, also from Athleta. It has pockets galore on the inside to keep all of your stuff organized too.

3. I actually have this cowl from Target and I really love it. I’ve been doing a lot of yoga lately and it’s perfect for pre and post workout. It feels like a big cozy sweatshirt without exactly looking like one, and you can’t beat the price.

4. What kind of boudoir site would this be if I didn’t include a fun bra and panty set? This set from Athleta is prettier than average for exercise gear and is made from super soft fabric, perfect for lower impact studio workouts.

5. I couldn’t help but include these New Balance shorts since they match everything else in the set so perfectly. Lol. Personally I’m not a big shorts wearer, but if I were, I’d totally rock these.

6. Since I’m not a big shorts wearer, I am a big capri wearer, and I love these. I’m not sure what it is, but I find capris to be the most flattering choice for workout pants, and I really like the fun ruching on the waistband of this pair.

There you have it! What’s your favorite thing to wear when you work out?

My 2014 Makeup Must-Haves|San Jose Bay Area Boudoir Photopraphy

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography

**After reading about some of my favorite products, Danea was inspired to share some of hers too. Lucky for you, she’s going to do a giveaway, which you can read more about at the end of my post. Good luck!**

I’ve always worn makeup, but over the last year or so I’ve really expanded my horizons and have improved my skills, or at least I’d like to think so (check out my previous post on why all women should have their makeup done professionally at least once).

I’ve also realized that wearing just face powder, mascara and eye shadow no longer cuts it (hello 30s!), which has opened up a whole new world of products to me.

While holiday shopping this year, I kept finding myself in Ulta and Sephora, which was pretty dangerous. As a result, I’ve got some cool new products (and a little less cash) to show for it. Most of these are quite versatile and have made it into my daily line up.

Without further ado, here are some of my new favorites:

2014 Makeup Essentials

1. Sephora’s Vacationer: Over the last year or so I’ve been really stepping up my makeup game, and have recently found that my makeup bag is too small. My previous bag is also from Sephora, and it’s still in great shape, so I decided to add this one to my Christmas list this year. They are a bit pricey, but they’re super durable and have helpful pockets and sections to keep everything in order.

2. Benefit’s Erase Paste: I had a milestone birthday this year and was suddenly gifted with what seem to be permanent dark circles under my eyes. Under-eye concealer is something I’ve never dabbled in, so at first site I picked up a random one at CVS, but it didn’t really do the trick. After doing some research I decided to give Benefit’s Erase Paste a try, and I was not let down. This stuff is serious. Not only does it cover dark circles, but it’s also brightening, which I think is a great added benefit. It can be a little cakey if not applied properly, but I’ve been using it with Sephora’s Pro Airbrush Concealer Brush and it works like magic.

3. L’Oreal Colour Riche Balm: I’ve never been much of a lipstick girl, which is something I might just need to work on changing in 2014. Quite frankly, I find it intimidating. As such, I always gravitate towards glosses and balms, and I picked up this one in Plush Plum randomly one night at the supermarket. For a random whim purchase, I’m pretty impressed. It’s as moisturizing as it claims and is a perfect sheer color for every day. I’ve also found it layers pretty well, so you can just add an extra layer for a bit of a deeper look.

4. Urban Decay Naked 3: The smart folks at Urban Decay released this new edition to their Naked line shortly before Christmas, and it quickly found it’s way to my list for Santa (aka my husband). I have the original Naked palette, and while it helped me discover some every-day favorites, there are only about four or five colors I use regularly. The Naked 3 colors have more of a rosey hue, which works really well with my skin and eye coloring. I’m still perfecting my skills when it comes to eyeshadow, and I find these colors to be really forgiving too!

5. Benefit’s Gimme Brow: It wasn’t until about a year or so ago that I realized the benefits of filling in my brows, and it took me about another six months to start filling them myself. Unfortunately, eyebrows don’t come with a user’s manual, and filling those things incorrectly ain’t no joke. I’ve been experimenting a lot with different products and was just recently introduced to Benefit’s Gimme Brow. This stuff is amazing! It’s made for folks like me who are still clueless after months of practice. It’s basically like mascara for your brows. It comes with a little brush and you just apply it to your existing eyebrows to give them a little oomph. Mine are pretty sparse in areas, so I’m just extra heavy handed in those areas and that seems to do the trick. It looks totally natural too!

Yup, I was inspired by Nicole’s post and decided to add three of my favorite things AND give them all away to one lucky person. It’s a $75 gift pack, so without further adieu…

Boudoir Coterie Sexy Photos

1. Laura Geller Eye & Lip Spackle. This stuff is amazing! I will admit that I used to think that eye shadow primer was just a gimmick to get you to purchase another product. But I was very wrong. This stuff is amazing and now I can’t wear eye shadow without it. Not only does it produce the rich pigments on your eye lid that was intended of your shadow, but it also creates a very long wearing look. I have yet to have any caking or creasing and I just apply a small layer with my ring finger. I will also admit, that I have only used the Lip Spackle a few times because I usually forget to do my lips until I’m in the car and I keep this bad boy with all my other makeup, but the few times I have used it it was perfect. P.S. I have used both on my lids, but do prefer the light. 😉

2. Laura Geller Double Ended Shadow/Liner Brush. If you are like me, you can’t draw a straight line with eyeliner to save your life. So I do the best I can and then use black/matching shadow with this slanted brush over top. Not only does it smooth and even the line, it helps set the liner for longer wear. Win, win!

3. 88 Mirage Color Palette. These colors, with the eye primer and you are set! Earth tones with a few grey brights and a nice mix of matte and shimmer. There is definitely colors for all skin tones in here! This is my daily palette and I can honestly say I have only one complaint– for the first two weeks using it I would choose the color, put it on my eye and then look at the palette and go “Crap, what color did I jut use!?” LOL. I’m totally not kidding, haha, but I got to know all the colors well and that’s no longer an issue. I will warn you that with the Eye Spackle these colors come on dark and very vibrant however they blend so amazingly well, hence the fact that this made my must have list!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Luxurious Lace for the Holidays|San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyWinter might not be quite the time that you’re thinking about taking off your clothes and posing for a photo session, but some of these pieces might just change your mind.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a lingerie post, so I figured it was about time. I have to confess though, this totally wasn’t supposed to be all about lace. My main theme was inspiration for winter boudoir sessions, but when I started browsing, I found myself to be super drawn to all of these gorgeous lace bra and panty sets in beautiful rich colors, so it ended up going in that direction. How’s a girl to resist?

What I love about a good  sexy bra and panty set for a photo session is that you can spend as much or as little as you want and still look fabulous. Check out the deep purple one from H&M below.

Also, while you might not wear lace undergarments every day, they’re a fun way to spice things up a bit, and you’ll likely get a lot more future use out of them than something like a corset or teddy. Winter is the perfect time for lace because you don’t need to worry about it showing through thinner summer fabrics.

luxurious lace for the holidays

Aside from all of the lace, I did find a couple of stunning and unique pieces that I’m totally swooning over. The first one is  this nightgown from ModCloth. The rich berry color and bow make me think holidays, but not in a cheesy  naughty Mrs. Claus sort of way (not that there’s anything wrong with that if that’s your thing).

Layer of Leisure Nightgown and Thong Set in Berry

And now, saving the best for last, this is from a local lingerie shop called Besos in Los Gatos. If I didn’t have other people to buy Christmas presents for, I’d run right out and buy this for myself and would be scheduling a photo session in it ASAP.
