Fashion Friday Ohhh Lulu | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyHappy Friday! I hope everyone (who celebrates) had a fabulous 4th of July!

I was tempted to do a 4th of July post last week, but red, white and blue lingerie seemed lame. I Googled “fireworks” and “lingerie” together, but the only thing that came up was Katy Perry performing her song “Firework” at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Not exactly what I was going for. (Don’t ask what I thought I was going to find. I had no idea).

Anyway, I’ve been busy with moving for the last few weeks, and then once I got settled, I got sick. Needless to say, I needed a little help with inspiration for this week’s Fashion Friday, so I took to Pinterest for ideas and it did not disappoint. I was just a few scrolls in when I found a really neat handmade lingerie shop on Etsy called Ohhh Lulu.

I have to say, I’m really impressed by anything handmade. The best thing I know how to make is a good salad, so I have a lot of respect for people who make things that are good enough to sell and have people actually buy.

Besides lots of really cute lingerie, which I’ll get to shortly, there are a ton of neat things about Ohhh Lulu. The company started as a hobby for Sarah Elaine when she graduated from fashion school, and it’s since turned into a full time business. In addition to selling her cute lingerie items, she also sells a few sewing patterns in a separate Etsy shop – Ohhh Lulu Sews! Aside from her Etsy store, she has an awesome website and fun a blog where she shares stories about her life, inspiration, etc. What I also think makes Ohh Lulu neat is how she photographs her lingerie. I’ve seen some pretty nice lingerie photographed on creepy mannequins on Etsy, so I really appreciate Ohh Lulu’s unique approach.

Alright, now I’ll quit rambling and get to the fun stuff. It was hard to pick just a few pieces to feature from Ohhh Lulu, but here are a few of my favorites from her shop:

I told ya her stuff is cute! I now officially want all of it. I also really want to go on a picnic and eat cupcakes while wearing cute lingerie.

Anyway, I love the props Sarah uses in her photos and I think they lend themselves to awesome boudoir session inspiration too. I could totally see a boudoir session in that adorable strawberry bra and panty set with cupcake props (I think this could be interpreted in more way than one…). How yummy!

Does Ohhh Lulu’s lingerie leave you feeling inspired for a boudoir session? Give us a call or shoot us an email today!

Fashion Friday Summer Brights from Agent Provocateur | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography I’ve been meaning to feature Agent Provocateur for a while now, so I decided to do a little browsing over there today. I was totally planning to feature some classic pieces in black and other neutrals, but I was really struck by their bright summer collections!

While I usually prefer lingerie that’s a little more timeless and classic, I think it’s good to have a little more fun once in a while — and summer is a great time to do that.

There’s no denying it — Agent Provacateur is expensive, but they’re known for their unique and beautiful styles and are totally worth it if you’ve got the spare cash.

Also, while it’s totally not necessary to spend a lot of money on outfits for a boudoir photo shoot, if you want to spend a little more on some really special pieces, a boudoir photo shoot is the best time to do so.

If you think about it, you probably wear most special lingerie for a few minutes, and then it gets tucked away in a drawer and often forgotten. If you wear something for a boudoir session, you’ll have photos to cherish forever, whether you wear the item again or not.

Now it’s time for a few my favorites from Agent Provocateur’s summer collection.

I’m not sure I could pull off bright lime green with my pasty skin, but for those of you who can, how fun is the Brittnie collection?

Lime green definitely isn’t for everyone, but Agent Provocateur’s summer collection has a bunch of different brights, so there’s something for all skin tones. Check out this gorgeous grape number from the Janet line.

If you don’t want to commit to a fully bright ensemble, the Petunia collection is mostly black with a few bright details.

Last but not least, one of my favorite summer colors – turquoise! This color reminds me of blue skies and tropical beaches, and is flattering on so many skin tones. The beautiful Lavelle collection has some fun peek-a-boo details and bright pink accents.

Ready to rock your favorite summer bright for a boudoir photo session?

Fashion Friday Summer Uniforms | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyI don’t know about you, but every summer I usually end up with one go-to dress that I wear over and over again, which I fondly refer to as my “summer uniform.” Since I’m getting ready for a big move this weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about my summer uniform the last few days and am so thankful I have a great one this year.

I’m moving a long-distance, so my stuff won’t be arriving for two to five business days until after I arrive, which means I’ve got to bring some clothes to tide me over. That’s all fine and dandy, except that I have a small car and two cats to transport along with other various items that can’t go with the movers. This means I have to pack extremely light (not a strong point for me) and think really strategically about what clothing items to bring. Thank goodness I’ve already got an awesome summer dress that I’ll be wearing a whole lot until the rest of my clothes arrive.

I’ve never really purchased a dress with the intention of it being my summer uniform, but I just realized that the one that fit the bill for me last summer, and one that’s quickly becoming this summer’s favorite, have a ton in common.

Here’s this summer’s favorite from Anthropologie:

This dress was a little on the pricy side for me, but I fell in love with the bright and fun pattern as soon as I saw it, so my husband (a very smart man) got it for me for my birthday. Needless to say it’s already earned it’s keep and I’m even strongly considering buying it in the other color it comes in too!

My favorite dress from last summer, which still on pretty heavy rotation in my wardrobe now too, is from J.Crew Factory. They no longer carry the exact dress, but this one is an extremely close match, with the only real difference being a slight variation in the pattern:50449_KE7098

I have to give a little disclosure on this dress, since it’s from J.Crew outlet, the one I have is sewn a tiny bit off. However, I can honestly say I didn’t notice it until halfway through last summer, and I received so many compliments on the dress I don’t think anyone could tell. It doesn’t stop me from loving the dress, but it can be a tiny bit annoying at times.

Anyway, since these two dresses have become serious wardrobe staples for me, I thought I’d share some of the qualities that make them so awesome. If you don’t already have a fabulous summer dress (or two, or three), try to find one with the following qualities. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

1. Versatility – Both of my dresses could be worn with flats or dressier wedges, making them appropriate for an array of events.

2. Comfort – These dresses both still feel great after a big meal. They can also both be worn with a conventional bra and have loops in the straps to keep bra straps in place.

3. Packability – These dresses are both made from a heavier cotton material, which may seem counter productive in summer months, but this keeps them from wrinkling when packed. Since they’re both tank-dresses, I don’t find the fabric to be too hot, and it doesn’t stick to you like some thinner materials would when you’re sweaty.

4. Fun Pattern – This isn’t as important as some of the other features, but I think I’d get bored wearing these dresses all the time if they were just solid colors. The only drawback here is that it’s more noticeable if you wear them often, but I like to believe that no one really pays that much attention. Also, I’m bad with accessories, so having a dress that’s interesting on it’s own is better for me and less to pack when I’m traveling.

5. Machine Washable – Washability is a big one for me, especially in the summer. Since I wear these dresses so frequently, it’s important to be able to wash them at home.

Do you have a “summer uniform?” If so, let us know in the comments! I’m always on the looking for more versatile dresses and outfits. You really can’t have enough of those in your closet.

Fashion Friday Ampere Lingerie | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyHappy Friday, everyone!

It’s been more than a few weeks since I’ve talked about lingerie here, so it’s about high time to get back to that. I hope you enjoyed a few other fun diversions in the meantime.

I was pondering what I wanted to cover this week when I came across a post in my Facebook feed about an event featuring Ampere lingerie.

I’ve never heard of Ampere lingerie before so I decided to check it out. As it turns out, I’m just a few Facebook friends removed from one of the founders.

Ampere is a relatively new and small line of lingerie that features a few classic (and beautiful) staples, but there are a few special features which I think make them really unique.

Correct fit is one of the major focuses of Ampere Lingerie, which is currently only available online. To ensure the best fit possible, Ampere offers 28 different bra sizes and free shipping and returns. What’s even better is that with each bra order they send you a few sizes to try, so you can keep the one that fits best and return the others free of charge. Pretty neat if you ask me.

The bras are a bit pricey (about $95), but they are made from high quality materials and every bra purchase comes with a free panty (why doesn’t everyone do this?).

Here are a few items from their current collection:

I feel like I say it a lot about lingerie I feature on Fashion Friday, but I really like how classic and pretty their styles are. While the colors and silhouettes are rather basic, the details make each of these pieces truly special and definitely boudoir worthy.

Unfortunately I don’t have $95 laying around in bra-money right now, but next time I do, I might just have to give one of these a try!

Has anyone bought anything from this line? I’d love to hear feedback! And of course we’d love to see it in the studio too. Give us a call or shoot us an email to schedule a boudoir session today.

Fashion Friday Rent the Runway | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography
I wanted to share a recent discovery of mine that’s not totally new, but new to me and totally fabulous.

My mother-in-law told me about Rent the Runway (RTR) a few years ago when I was looking for a wedding dress. They didn’t really have what I was looking for then, but I must have signed up somewhere with my email, because a couple weeks ago I got a promotional email from them (the first one ever) offering $25 off my first rental.

If you’re not familiar with RTR, it’s a shop that rents designer dresses for a fraction of the purchase price. You simply pick your style, order it, and it’s shipped to you via UPS. You can even order a second size for free. After your event you return your dress in a prepaid envelope and RTR takes care of the cleaning for you. You even get to keep the garment bag it’s originally shipped in (I don’t know why, but this was a big plus for me. I could see these coming in handy later.)

First of all, I have to commend them for good email marketing. If they’d been spamming me weekly since I signed up, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. I loved that they didn’t contact me for more than a year, and when they did, it was with a deal. Kudos.

RTR must have known is was a good time to contact me because my wedding anniversary was this past weekend, my birthday is this coming weekend, and my husband’s birthday is at the end of the month.

After browsing the site a bit, I decided to take them up on the $25 off my first rental and got the “Some Like it Hot” dress by Milly to wear for my anniversary dinner. The price tag on this rental was a little high (to me at least), but with the $25 deal, I decided to go for it.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about falling in love with the dress and wanting to buy it (it retails for more than $400), but I actually didn’t. The dress was fabulous, but not something I’d wear enough to warrant even thinking about buying it, and the fit wasn’t perfect.

After my first rental I was totally hooked. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait long for my  next one, because I ordered the “Guilty as Charged” dress by BCBCMAXAZRIA  for a casual birthday party earlier this week. This dress was super cute a comfy, though a little hot. I had no idea it was going to be 90 degrees this week!

IMG_4596

This dress I actually might have considered buying because I think it’d be great with tights and boots in the winter, and I would actually get a lot of wear out of it. However, I checked the BCBGMAXAZRIA site and couldn’t find it anywhere, which leads me to believe it’s an older style. Oh well.

What I really love about Rent the Runway is that there are reviews from real people, and many post photos of themselves in the dresses. This way you get an idea of what the dress would look like on someone your size, and not just the model. You can actually enter your body type, age, height, weight, bra size, etc. into the site and then search for photos of other users with similar proportions. It’s pretty neat! Most of the dresses I’ve looked at go up to size 12 or so, and they also have a plus-size page too.

On top of having fabulous dresses, Rent the Runway also has a huge collection of accessories, which would be perfect for a boudoir session. Rental prices range from $5 all the way up to $400. Since most of us don’t typically purchase jewelry to match our favorite lingerie, this is a perfect opportunity to borrow something that would. They have a lot of pretty fancy stuff, so it would be great for weddings too!

Have you tried Rent the Runway? If so, let us know what you think in the comments. I know I’m hooked!

Fashion Friday Dita Von Teese | San Jose Boudoir Photography

I Boudoir Coterie Portrait photography have to admit, I didn’t know a whole lot about Dita Von Teese other than that she was once married to Marilyn Manson and is often seen showing off her curves in sexy lingerie, but when Danea told me about her new line at Bloomingdale’s, I decided it was time to find out more.

From my quick Wikipedia research, Dita Von Teese (born Heather Renne Sweet) is most famous for re-popularizing burlesque performance, and is also a model, actress and entrepreneur.

Her most recent entrepreneurial endeavor is her Bloomingdale’s lingerie line, and I have to say, it is gorgeous!

Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to actually check any of these out in person since the closest Bloomingdales is a bit of a trek from my house, but based on the reviews on their site, Dita’s line is not only gorgeous, but also good quality (as I’d expect from Bloomingdale’s).

This collection definitely has a lot of burlesque influence and is classically sexy. I really like how black lace seems to be the uniting element, but it’s accented with pops of color and other unique details. Here are a few of my favorites:

What I really love about Dita’s lingerie is that it’s all timeless, which is especially important when you’re planning a photo session. No one wants to look back at what they were wearing in a few years and wonder “what was I thinking?”

Although red isn’t always advised for boudoir sessions, this set is gorgeous. Check out the details on the bra!

And then there’s these panties! Is it weird that I wish they could show the back of these panties on a model? I guess it wouldn’t be appropriate for the Bloomingdale’s website, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this photo is not even close to doing them justice.

So there you have it. Has anyone tried on or seen this collection in person? I’d love to hear about it!

Of course, we’d also love to see some of this lingerie in the studio, so if you’ve got some and want to schedule a session, give us a call or shoot us an email today!

Fashion Friday Show-Stopping Shoes | San Jose Boudoir Photography

Boudoir Coterie Portrait photographyFor last week’s Fashion Friday we talked about fabulous backsides. Today I wanted to feature another fun detail that’s often overlooked – shoes!

Shoes might not be the first thing to come to mind when you’re planning boudoir outfits, but they can really add another dimension to your photos.

Got a pair of killer heels that leave you with aching feet and blisters? Perfect! Since you’ll only be on your feet for a short amount of time, and you won’t have to walk 16 blocks, a boudoir session is the perfect time to wear those totally impractical stilettos you promised yourself you’d find a reason to wear one day. Even if you only wear the shoes once, you’ll have photos to cherish forever.

For my session I wore a pair of black five-inch heels that had been hiding in the back of my closet since the day I purchased them at TJMaxx (a great place to look for shoes if you need them). They turned out to be difficult to walk in and a bit too big, but my judgement was clouded by the $19.99 price tag. They might not be great for everyday, but they were perfect for my session.

Need inspiration? Here are a few of my favorites from around the web:
